The Criticality of Understanding Why | Weekbook #25

When motivation falters, let action lead to motivation. But what about when it doesn't?

In recent weeks my motivation has wavered. Despite this, I've continued pushing on, relying on my systems and habits to keep me going and hoping that action would eventually lead back to motivation.

Sadly, it hasn't.

So, I spent the past week contemplating the problem and after numerous days of reflection, I realised that I need to go deeper. I need to go back to why.

Some months ago, I read [[Start With Why]] by Simon Sinek, a book that teaches the importance of understanding your purpose, your reason for showing up every day. It is here that I found the answer to my problem.

As I sat and questioned my recent actions and direction, attempting to relate them to my goals and purpose, I simply couldn't. There was a clear disconnect. What I have discovered is that I have drifted away from the path I believe in, to one that I don't, and how can I ever expect to be motivated to achieve something that doesn't align with who I want to be?

Without purpose and direction, what can I hope to achieve? A ship without a heading is just a vessel drifting aimlessly through the vast ocean of life.

So, what's next? There is only one answer to this question - corrective action.

I am going to take the time to steer my ship back to the path I believe in, the one where my purpose resides. I'm going to be more intentional with how I spend my time, working in-line with, rather than against my why. I'm going to evaluate my systems and habits with the aim of building a stronger foundation, so when I inevitably drift off-course again, the safety net is stronger.

I'm going to ensure I never lose sight of the criticality of why again.
